Salvation
The Greek word "soteria" translated
"salvation" has the base meanings "rescue"
and "deliverance." It aptly describes the rescue from
the penalty of sin.
The Bible declares that all men are sinners (Rom.
3:23) and the penalty for sin is spiritual death (Rom: 6:23).
It also declares that no man escapes the effects of sin and
is therefore destined for destruction.
The rescue, defined by salvation, is performed
by Jesus Christ, who, being sinless; took the penalty of sin,
by dying for all men. Having paid the price for sin, Jesus is
in a position to rescue those for whom he died.
The rescue Jesus offers must be accepted to be
received. Acceptance is gained by a confession of personal sin
and by asking Jesus for forgiveness. Then, the rescuer must
allow Jesus to be his/her master; by obeying the commandments
of Jesus and growing in this relationship with Him.
